Collection consists of one transcript and eight signed letters from April and May, 1861, from Lee to Philip St. George Cocke and Jubal Anderson Early detailing instructions on mustering in Virginia army volunteers, stationing troops at Manassas Gap Junction, Culpeper and Alexandria, and other problems surrounding the organization of the Virginia militia. There is also a letter to John B. Cocke thanking him for care of his horse.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
